Is it a Good Idea to Purchase Frieze Carpet?

Sometimes also called twist carpeting, Frieze carpet has become extremely popular over the years. While a lot of people may mistake it for the shag varieties that were so popular during the 60s and 70s, it has certainly evolved for the better since then. Thankfully, the newer varieties of frieze carpet no longer need to be ‘raked’ to keep them looking good because they have been manufactured in such a way that they are now more durable than ever before.

Two Types of Frieze Carpet

Frieze carpeting has been created from a series of short, twisted fibers and its strands are usually less than ¼ inch long. Each tuft or section has two fibers that have been twisted together in a series of between 3 and 5 twists per inch with standard quality varieties. However, higher-quality frieze can consist of between 7 and 9 twists per inch, which makes them more resilient to dirt and footprint impressions.

There are two types or categories of frieze carpeting. These include the higher quality varieties that have been manufactured from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and those that have been made from wool or nylon fibers. In most cases, the wool and/or nylon varieties are a little more expensive, but they are usually better suited to higher traffic applications and tend to be more resistant to stains as well. However, even the PET variety of frieze carpet can be a great choice for families who may have a limited budget for floor coverings. This type of carpeting can also be a great choice in offices, as it is relatively resistant to showing footmarks and tracks from the furniture.

Advantages of Frieze Carpet

The shorter fibers used to manufacture frieze carpet mean that it is ideally suited to high traffic areas. The fibers have a way of ‘flopping down,’ which helps to conceal dirt, dust, footprints and even smaller stains. Because of the way it has been made, it can last far longer than many other types of carpeting, and another benefit is that it requires far less maintenance than other carpet varieties.
In addition, it’s available in a wide range of colors, which means that it can be matched to virtually any home or office décor. Frieze carpet is also extremely soft underfoot, which means that it’s far more comfortable to walk on as well. Being as thick as it is, this carpet is ideal to use in homes with babies and young children because it has the ability to dampen noise substantially. Frieze carpets are able to trap air between the twists, which can help keep a home or office warmer than other, shorter-fibered carpet varieties as well.

Potential Disadvantages of this Carpeting

As with all other types of carpets, frieze also has a few disadvantages. That which is made from PET fibers can be a little less comfortable underfoot and it is also less able to conceal dirt than wool or nylon varieties. This can make PET frieze carpeting less durable than wool or nylon varieties. Because frieze carpet is a lot more durable than much other carpeting, it is also considered as being ‘expensive.’ However, when the cost of long-term maintenance such as professional cleaning and vacuuming is taken into account, frieze carpets can actually prove to be the better financial choice in the long term.

Tips to Keep Frieze Carpet Clean

Although frieze carpeting is great at concealing dirt and dust, this doesn’t mean that it never needs to be vacuumed or cleaned. All carpeting is prone to becoming stained beyond repair if it is not properly cared for and frieze should be vacuumed weekly to help restore its appearance and to ensure that dirt doesn’t become ingrained into the fibers. It’s recommended that a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar be used, as this will help lift all of the dirt that is lying under the twists, and frieze carpet should be professionally cleaned at least once a year – or more often if you have young kids or pets in the house.

When shopping around for frieze carpet, it’s recommended that you spend as much as you can comfortably afford. This will ensure that you get a good quality product at a fair price and that it will last you as long as possible after being installed. If you are going to be installing this carpeting in high traffic rooms, darker colors are recommended. Purchasing a frieze carpet will be one of the best investments you can make for your home.
